Abstract
The study assessed the awareness of people and their commitment towards the control of gully erosion along River Ngaddabul flood plain. The study assessed the people's awareness in the study area, examined the community efforts in controlling the problem and also it assessed the government efforts put in place to control the problem in the study area. Data used included both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were generated through structured questionnaire and the data obtained was analyzed using simple descriptive statistics. The results revealed that almost all the respondents were aware of the presence of the gully erosion in the study area. In addition, the study found out that 57% of the respondents were affected by the gully erosion. Furthermore, the study showed that majority (67.9%) of the respondents is not aware of any self-help effort being made by the community to tackle the menace of the gully erosion. In addition, the study noted that Government was also not making any effort towards controlling the gully erosion in the area. Hence, the study concluded that the major causes of the problem of gully erosion include both natural and anthropogenic factors via sand excavation. It was recommended that the relevant governmental and non-governmental agencies should encourage people to engage in community development practices while government also needs to construct new drainage systems and repair the collapsed ones in the study area.
